Here are a few things to keep in mind as you shop for carpet flooring.

Carpet Types

Its base and fibers largely determine your carpet’s characteristics and functional abilities. Carpet fiber, also known as pile, are made from both natural and synthetic materials. Some of the different carpet types are cut pile, loop pile, multi-level pile, and cut & loop pile, which are made from either a synthetic like nylon and polyester or natural fibers like wool.

A cut pile has a denser appearance. Loop pile, which leaves no visible loose ends, offers a smoother, more even surface, while multi-level and cut & loop pole has uneven surfaces and additional texture. The main types of carpe include level loop, patterned, textured, frieze, and plush. Depending on how you’d like your carpet to function, it’s important to pay close attention to the materials that comprise your carpet fibers. Factors such as stain-resistance and long-term durability are determined by pile, so it’s important to gain a good understanding of exactly how your carpeting works.

Nylon is arguably the most popular carpet fiber on the market. Nylon is not naturally stain-resistant but can be treated to become stain resistant. It is mostly known for wearing well over time. Polyester is a synthetic fiber similar to nylon but not identical. Polyester is known for being soft and is being improved by technology every day.

Triexta is another synthetic fiber and is naturally stain resistant and easy to clean. Unlike nylon, triexta does not need to be treated to be stain or wear resistant. Olefin/Polypropylene is a sturdy fiber best used for patterned carpets. These carpet fibers are best for low traffic areas of your home. Wool is a natural fiber that is pricey but soft. It is also resistant to flames and wears well.

Carpet Installation

Thanks to modern ingenuity, carpet can be used in many different types of interior settings. Choose carpet flooring that’s equipped with stain, wear, and fade-resistance for high-traffic areas like your hallways and stairs. Soft, plush carpet, on the other hand, might fare better in a master bedroom or living room. For those with pets or small children, there are currently many waterproof carpet selections worth considering. One general rule of thumb: carpet should generally be avoided in the kitchen or bathroom due to the excessive moisture and humidity.
