Expert Advice - Choosing a Carpet Style

Jim Aaron, our VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, shares some information on the different carpet styles that are available.

What Are the Popular Carpet Types?

There are several carpet characteristics that play a role including the base that the fibers are attached to, fibers that are either synthetic like nylon or natural like wool, the pile which the tightly twisted fibers, and the carpet cushion. Besides having to choose a color, you will want to consider other options as well that make up carpeting. Pile styles have unique characteristics that’ll you’ll want to know before selecting a carpet. Different pile styles include cut pile, loop pile, multi-level pile, and cut and loop piles.

What are these different characteristics? Cut pile has fibers that are cut at the ends making the carpet denser. Loop pile is the opposite, where no fibers are left at the surface and are in a series of loops, giving the carpet an even look. Multi-level loop staggers the height of the loop fibers to create an uneven surface. Cut and loop piles also provide an uneven look but also give texture to the carpet and hide dirt.

The most important thing you need to do is choose the right type of carpet. There are five main types: level loop, patterned, textured, frieze, and plush.
